World Press Freedom Day

Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. "21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers" is the theme for 2011 World Press Freedom Day.

Where to Live in United States to Avoid a Natural Disaster

Weather disasters and quakes: who’s most at risk? The analysis below, by Sperling’s Best Places, a publisher of city rankings, is an attempt to assess a combination of those risks in 379 American metro areas. Risks for twisters and hurricanes (including storms from hurricane remnants) are based on historical data showing where storms occurred. Earthquake risks are based on United States Geological Survey assessments and take into account the relative infrequency of quakes, compared with weather events and floods. Additional hazards included in this analysis: flooding, drought, hail and other extreme weather.

The death toll was high in several Southern states after devastating storms ripped through the region, spawning deadly tornadoes. This Interactive map shows the locations of reported tornadoes each hour (Central time) across the eastern United States over the past six days.

London Tower Bridge

London's Tower Bridge is not only a major tourist attraction but also an exceptional achievement of engineering and architecture.

In 2011, GE set out to design an innovative lighting system to illuminate the towers and accentuate the bridge's metal framework — while simultaneously increasing energy efficiency.

Nuclear Reactors

Voice of America has complied a database of every public record on nuclear facilities from the International Atomic Energy Agency and created a Google Map of the results.

When you zoom in on the map, details of the nuclear facilities are shown in the map sidebar. Voice of America also use the Google Chart API to display histograms of plants built or shut down in any given year, year-by-year power output records from every single facility worldwide and maps showing the power output and number of plants in each country.
